Nitrous Oxide

While many children are capable of sitting through a dental procedure, some struggle with anxiety, overexcitement, or special needs that can make this difficult. In these situations, we offer nitrous oxide gas as a way to help your son or daughter feel relaxed and at ease as we improve their smile’s health.

Nitrous oxide/oxygen is a blend of two gases, oxygen and nitrogen. The blend is given through a small breathing mask placed over the child’s nose. The gas merely relaxes the child. It does not put the child to sleep. While inhaling nitrous oxide/oxygen, your child remains fully conscious and keeps all natural reflexes. The child never loses consciousness and easily responds to verbal commands. Nitrous Oxide’s ultimate effect is to raise the pain threshold and make the child more comfortable during the procedure. It may also appear to the patient as though time has moved quickly during the entire time that they were under the influence of the sedative. After the procedure, letting the child take in regulated breaths of oxygen will reverse the effects of Nitrous Oxide.

In addition to that, Nitrous Oxide works well with patients with a sensitive gag reflex that may interfere with the delivery of the dental procedure or treatment.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recognizes this technique as safe and effective for treating children’s dental needs. The gas is mild, non-addictive, easily taken, and with normal breathing, quickly eliminated from the body.
